Our Gifted & Talented students at Columbian receive instruction primarily in the regular classroom. With the help of our Gifted & Talented teacher Amy Barrett, teachers alter instruction to accommodate the learning needs of our gifted population. Students are also pulled out of class on occasion to work with Mrs. Barrett on a focused unit of instruction. In addition, gifted students receive instruction on the unique needs of gifted children.
To qualify for the gifted program, Mrs. Barrett routinely looks for qualifying test scores on state tests, reading scores, and scores on non-verbal tests given to every 2nd and 5th grader, and creativity tests given to every 3rd and 5th grader. If a child has the scores necessary for qualification, parents will be notified. Additional testing is not required for the gifted program. If, however, you feel that your child would benefit from the Highly Gifted program in DPS, an application needs to be completed and additional testing is necessary.
