Letter from the Principal |

Dear Columbian Families, I am writing this at the very beginning of the 2007- 2008 academic year, anxiously waiting for the year to begin as it is the first time I begin as Principal of this wonderful school. I came to Columbian in 2002 as the Literacy Coach, to support language arts in all grades. I worked closely with the teachers and staff and with students and established many wonderful relationships and partnerships. It was so easy to love our school! Coming from upstate New York and a very rural school district, I found DPS to be different, although the changes that were occurring were very exciting. I have learned more about being part of a large, urban school district. I have learned about the children and the families and our community. These understandings have become so important as I grow, both personally and professionally. I was honored to become principal of Columbian in January 2007 and look forward to working closely with the students, the staff and the families. Our very special elementary school has a great deal to offer; our students are fortunate to have many different opportunities. In addition to a strong focus on the academics, we provide Art and Music, Library and Technology, Physical Education, Gifted & Talented, and Special Education programs. Our after school programs, which are supported by a very generous grant through Lights On After School, address the academics, the creative and the physical. We have ESL classes through the Toyota Family Literacy Program that help our parents learn more about what their children are doing in school and for homework. Numerous family events, scheduled throughout the year, offer families time to learn together, and to socialize with others. Reading incentive programs, such as Accelerated Reader and the Bronco Reading Corner, encourage independent achievement. Civic and leadership groups help children understand that helping others is a very important part of life. Special assemblies and breakfasts recognize and celebrate those who continue to work hard everyday to become a “good citizen”, those who attend school regularly, and those who have achievements that are literacy based, or artistic, or musical. We celebrate all learners and we teach the “whole child” to become successful! As a member of the Denver Public School system, we recognize that all of us have work to do. We will carefully examine data and base our instruction upon what our students truly need. We understand that test scores are not where we want them to be. Under the guidance and support of our Superintendent and our Chief Academic Officer we embrace new materials, innovative ideas, and considerations for how to improve. We work collaboratively and we meet regularly to study and to learn and to plan. As we proceed through this school year, a year where change is guaranteed, we as a staff will maintain our focus. As a highly qualified staff, we will provide quality instruction for all students. We will expect them to be successful. For … “Whatever it takes, our kids are worth it!” Welcome to the Columbian Elementary School Community! We are glad you are here! Very Sincerely, Mrs. Deborah A. Tu-Tygrs
