Columbian Elementary School offers a variety of programs and courses to meet the needs of all students. We serve English Language Learners through the TNLI model, providing English Language Acquisition instruction to Spanish speaking students at every grade level.
Our Early Childhood Education (ECE) programs: Children who are three or four before October 1st, 2007 may apply for our ECE program. We have programs that combine three and four year old children for an excellent transition from home or group care into the school environment. There is a small student – teacher ratio with a strong focus on oral language development in the student’s primary language. Literacy through stories and experiences is an important part of the curriculum and math activities that are interactive and “hands-on” teach very beginning skills. Social interactions and structured play help students learn to become friends and help one another.
Our Kindergarten: We have two full day kindergarten programs, although families who choose only a half day may do so. Half day students will attend mornings only. Kindergarten teachers continue the focus on oral language, phonics instruction and beginning reading skills, writing practice – through illustrations and words, and basic math skills using Everyday Mathematics. Students receive instruction in their primary language and special services are provided as required (Special Education, Speech, OT/PT.) All content areas are taught in the a.m. session, and those students who remain for the afternoon will attend specials and have additional practice to support primary content.
Literacy: Following the Denver Plan and the Denver Public Schools’ Planning Guides, students receive three hours of literacy instruction and practice daily. Time is divided into direct instruction, small group and individual conferences, independent reading and writing, and sharing among group members. Students read and write in a variety of genres and for authentic purposes. Many have opportunities to publicize their achievements during venues such as school assemblies and performances, our annual “Barnes & Noble” night, and our Authors’ Tea.
Library Media Center and Technology Lab: We have a certified librarian who divides her time between the LMC and the computer lab. The Technology Lab has 30 Dell XP computers and students learn about Kid Pix, Internet research and begin to create their own Power Point presentations.
The library has recently had a wonderful “boost” through the Carmel Hill Foundation and Accelerated Reader. Through a grant we received many new books in the library (and in classrooms) and students who are read to or read independently take on-line quizzes that assess comprehension. The program provides a wonderful incentive for all readers to progress and read more! Students read and test at their own independent level – so all students can progress and feel confident about their success!
During the 2007-2008 school year we will be changing one corner of our library… it will become the Bronco Corner and will be complete with Bronco artifacts, a reading center and more new books. For many, this newest grant will offer even greater incentive to read!
Mathematics: Columbian recently purchased the newest edition (2007) of the Everyday Mathematics program, replacing the 2004 version. EDM provides an enhanced and balanced curriculum that is consistent throughout the grades and spirals from grade to grade. The instructional design is built on student interest and maximizes learning through a variety of activities.
The Arts: Columbian students have Art and Music classes each week. In addition to regular instruction related to theory, and practice to enhance personal artistic skills, we have performances throughout the year at assemblies and evening events. We have two art shows that feature specific grade levels and families are encouraged to attend these very important cultural events. We recently were given a piano keyboard lab and many students are learning the basics and playing their own music! Enrichment classes in both Art and Music are offered for interested participants during after school programs.
Physical Education: Our P.E. program utilizes the newly constructed Learning Landscape and the soccer field that is on the west side of our complex, as well as the newest equipment available in the gymnasium. Students are expected to be physically active, physically fit and are encouraged to follow good nutritional habits. A variety of activities during the school day and during after school programs help students explore their physical ability and good sportsmanship among teams is a strong focus.
Science: We are excited to begin the Tracks program, a recent addition that supports Science instruction. Each grade level has specific units that are taught throughout the year, based upon the Colorado State Science Standards. Tracks offers hands-on and interactive experiences for learners.
Social Studies: Activities are specific to grade level standards. Students demonstrate learning specific to holidays and multi-cultural celebrations. Colonial Days in the fifth grade and Cinco de mayo are examples of annual celebrations that remind us of the importance of culture and history.
Exceptional Education Programs: We have two Multi-Intensive Center Programs, a Mild-Moderate Special Education teacher, Speech Therapist, Occupational and Physical Therapist and School Social Worker. Through the efforts of these professionals we are proud to be able to support the needs of all students.
Student Council The Student Council representatives meet twice monthly. First through fifth grades are represented. The Student Council supports celebrations, fund raising, special days and honors students who are "Caught Being Good"!
Gifted and Talented (G/T): Our after-school G/T program provides students with enriching opportunities that support learning potential and styles of learning. Students in grades three, four and five come together and learn from one another. They are challenged, accelerated and engaged in many activities in all academic subjects. Several field trips throughout the year provide additional experiences that go beyond the school day.
Family Literacy: Through the Toyota Foundation, we have been providing ESL instruction to many of our families for the past two years. We have an ESL instructor and offer English instruction to adult students, four mornings a week. In addition to learning about language, parents find out about what their children are doing in the classrooms and have opportunities twice a week to work with their child during instructional times. This program is very beneficial for those anxious to help with homework at night. Some participants committed to this program have received computers and have learned how to maneuver through the internet! Monthly field trips allow participants to attend DPAC meetings, to learn more about Denver Public Schools policies and procedures. During the morning sessions, childcare for younger siblings is provided
Please contact the office at (303) 433-2539 if you have any questions about any of our programs.
