2018-19 Principal Welcome

Posted 06/04/2018

Welcome 2018-2019 Columbian Families,

We have wrapped up the 2017-18 school year and are already looking forward to the 2018-19 school year.  Although we saw many great things happen last school year we will be doing some new and interesting things for next year.  There will be some exciting new changes and we look forward to the honor of educating your students.

Students will begin each day in their homeroom and participate in a classroom meeting. This daily ritual is to build relationships, connections to the greater school community, and teach mindfulness in students. Lessons will focus on developing self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision making. Students will then be split into  groups for direct instruction. Teachers will be specialized in their content area and teach their content area to all student.

Personalization continues to be is a school-wide focus for 2018-2019. Increasing students voice and choice in their learning is essential to them becoming independent learners and thinkers! To get a jump start on our partnership to personalize your child’s learning experience, teachers and staff will be conducting home visits this summer. We are participating in the Denver Public School Parent Teacher Home visit program. Please anticipate a call or email from your child’s teacher(s) this summer to schedule a time to visit. It is not essential that the visit be conducted at the home as you can also meet at a park, library, or other agreed upon area.  All families that participate in the home visit program will receive Columbian swag to further show your support!

We have many exciting learning opportunities planned for students for 2018-2019. Columbian has 125 years of educating the students of the Sunnyside neighborhood and we look forward to your family contributing to the next 125 years!
